One will be able to find a number of turtle hatcheries dedicated to protecting and conserving endangered species of turtles found along the southwestern coast of the island. As you visit one of these establishments such as the Kosgoda turtle hatchery, you will get the chance to learn more about these gentle creatures and actively contribute to their welfare.
Five out of the seven species of sea turtles can be found upon the golden soil of Sri Lanka. They are namely, leatherbacks, green turtles, loggerheads, hawksbills and Olive Ridley turtles.
After laying the eggs, the mother turtle returns to the ocean. The staff of the turtle hatchery tirelessly works at night, collecting the precious eggs which are then transferred to a protected area. After the eggs are hatched, the baby turtles are released into the ocean.
