Meetiyagoda is an unimposing village that lies between Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa. At the heart of this village, one will find a number of 18th-century style mines, which yield an abundance of moonstones of milky white lustre.
The moonstone which captures the brilliant, ethereal sheen of the moon is one of the most beautiful semi-precious stones in the world. The village of Meetiyagoda has had a flourishing mining industry since 1906. You will be able to learn more about this labour intensive industry which has provided employment to a number of locals living in the region. The tours are generally offered free of charge. Upon completion of the tour, you will be able to visit a few local shops to buy some beautiful stones to take back home with you as a souvenir of your trip to the moonstone mines in Ambalangoda.
